About me

I got a Master in Artificial Intelligence, Pattern Recognition and Digital Images at the Univesitat Politecnica de Valencia (Spain) in 2009. I started my PhD. that same year, in the area of Human-Computer interaction, working at the Departamento de Sistemas Informáticos y Computación (DSIC) together with Emilio Camahort and Francisco Abad.
The focus of my PhD research was on the study of multimodal 3D User Interfaces, specifically, studying multimodal interfaces for Augmented Reality and Omnidirectional video applications. I got my PhD in Computer Science in 2015.

I'm currently working as a senior researcher at the Expertise Centre for Digital Media (EDM), a research institute of Hasselt University.

Honours and Awards

2007 - Ph. D. Scholarship. Given by the National Council of Science and Technology, México.

2005 - Scholarship for a research internship in National Institute of Astrophysics, Optics and Electronics (México). Given by the Mexican Science Academy, México.

Research internships

2013 - Expertise Centre for Digital Media (EDM) - Hasselt University. Under supervision of Prof. Dr. Kris Luyten

2005 - National Institute of Astrophysics, Optics and Electronics (INAOE). Under supervision of Prof. Dr. Leopoldo Altamirano

Projects

December 2012 - December 2014.
AIVIE - Augmented immersive-video-based interactive environments (iMinds R-4582)
Project web page
As a researcher in the Human-Computer Interaction group of the Expertise Centre of Digital Media (EDM), I investigated gesture-based interaction methods for immersive Omnidirectional video environments. I was also part of the Networked & Secure Systems team in charge of the streaming technology to broadcast non-linear video content over the Internet.

From January 2015 until December 2015
ICoSOLE - Immersive Coverage of Spatially Outspread Live Events (FP7 no.610370)
Project website
As a researcher in the Networked & Secure Systems group of the Expertise Centre of Digital Media (EDM) investigating and developing streaming technology for live broadcasting using the Mpeg-DASH standard. As a result of our research, we developed Wander-Couch, a Smart TV application to enable virtual visits to music festivals live from the living room of the user.

From October 2015 until December 2016
COnCEPT - Collaborative CrEative design PlaTform, Expertise (FP7 no.610725)
Project web page
As a researcher working at the Expertise Centre of Digital Media (EDM) I investigated together with my colleagues of the HCI group how to improve traceability of ideas and decisions in a collaborative design project. Following a user-centred approach we introduced the concept of decision cards that we tested using a web-based application we developed: Helaba.

From October 2016 until December 2018
EXPERT tool, EXercise Prescription in Everyday practice & Rehabilitative Training (UHasselt PoC)
Project website
Together with my colleagues prof. Dr Karin Coninx, Prof. dr. Paul Dendale and Prof. dr. Dominique Hansen, I collaborated in the design and development of the EXercise Prescription in Everyday practice & Rehabilitation Training tool (EXPERT tool). The EXPERT tool is a decision support system that helps cardiologists and physiotherapists prescribing exercise interventions for patients with a cardiovascular disease according to the ESC guidelines and the evidence and expertise of the EAPC EXPERT working group.

From May 2018 until April 2021
i2-CoRT - Innovation and Implementation acceleration for Complex Rehabilitation Technology (Interreg EMR)
Project website
The i2-CoRT project brings together state-of-the-art knowledge & experience of rehabilitation centres, knowledge centres, (SME) businesses, healthcare sector organizations and patients (organizations) in order to promote and accelerate rehabilitation technology innovation and implementation. As a senior researcher at the Expertise Centre of Digital Media (EDM) I am part of the multidisciplinary team working on the development of sensor-based technology for identification and assessment of arm-hand skill performance and to objectively measure the quality of arm-hand skill performance, as well as in the robot assisted arm-hand rehabilitation development team.

From January 2020
CoroPrevention - Personalized Prevention for Coronary Heart Disease (H2020)
Project website
The goal of the CoroPrevention project is to significantly reduce premature deaths and severe disabilities in patients with coronary heart disease in Europe. By means of a persinalized prevention program and the use of technology, the intervention will encourage long-term behaviour changes and lifestyle improvements as well as improving medication adherence by patients with coronary heart disease. The CoroPrevention project studies 12,000 patients from six EU countries, from which 2,000 will participate in the RCT to explore the use of technology. As a senior researcher at the Expertise Centre of Digital Media (EDM) I am part of the multidisciplinary team working on the design and development of the CoroPrevention tool suite, a set of software tools for cardiologists, nurses, and patients.

From January 2020
EAPC EXPERT-network (FWO-ICA)

The overall objective of the project is to consolidate and support the activities of the existing EAPC EXPERT group, and to anchor the role of the UHasselt/Flemish researchers in that group of international experts. The EXPERT group gathers under the umbrella of EAPC, the European Association for Preventive Cardiology. The members of the group promote standardisation and prescriptions of exercise and physical activity according to recognised guidelines and thoroughly discussed expert opinions. The FWO-ICA project reinforces the current synergy between coordinating interdisciplinary research in Medicine, Rehabilitation Sciences and Computer Science.
